23 years ago, Netflix pitched Blockbuster to buy their company.
At the time, Netflix was making less than it was spending and the owners were desperate to sell.
Blockbuster declined their offer. They denounced the business model Netflix invented, and they boasted their 13 year firm grip on the industry.
Fast forward to the present, Blockbuster is nothing but a memory and Netflix is worth $230 billion dollars.
This is a prime example of the dangers of comfort and what happens when complacency replaces innovation.
Similar to the parachuting veterans who get so comfortable sky diving, they forget to pull their shoot. Comfort kills everyone and everything eventually.
The lesson here is to avoid comfort as much as possible.
Whether you’re an entrepreneur, an athlete, whatever, you should continue to learn, adapt, and innovate in every way possible.
And never allow comfort to substitute fear. Fear keeps us on our toes, comfort keeps us on our ass.
